Get started with MagWLED-2

This guide is for MagWLED-2, with two LED outputs and a green screw-terminal block. Have MagWLED-1? Use its setup guide instead.

1. Choose your power source

For USB-C, set the board’s voltage selector to match your LED strips. For external DC power, choose a supply with the voltage your strips require. Disconnect power before changing wiring or voltage settings.

  • USB-C Power Delivery: up to 20V and 5A total. The supply must support the selected voltage; the negotiated current can be lower than 5A. A 5A-capable cable is required for 5A operation.
  • External DC power: up to 24V and 10A total, with a maximum of 5A per channel.

Each channel is limited to 5A. On USB-C, both channels share the negotiated current budget—5A total at most. For 24V operation, use a matching external supply; USB-C provides at most 20V.

MagWLED-2 supports USB-C connected alongside external power for standby and external relay control. This differs from MagWLED-1. Connecting both sources does not increase the output current limits.

2. Connect your LED strips

Use the markings printed beside the terminal block to identify each output’s data, positive and ground connections and the external power input. Connect to the input end of each strip, following its data-direction marking. Do not use the MagWLED-1 pigtail wiring diagram for this board.

The screw terminals accept 28–16 AWG wire. Select wire suitable for the current and cable length; that range does not mean every supported wire size can carry 5A. Check polarity and secure each connection before applying power. For a wiring check, send a clear photo to support@magwled.com.

3. Connect WLED to Wi-Fi

MagWLED-2 comes with WLED installed. On first setup, connect your phone or computer to WLED-AP using password wled1234. Open http://4.3.2.1 if the setup page does not open automatically. Enter your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network details, save, then reconnect your phone or computer to that network.

4. Configure both outputs

Open WLED’s LED settings and choose the LED type and pixel count for each connected strip. Keep the MagWLED-2 firmware’s board-specific pin assignments. Set up segments for the two outputs if you want separate effects or colors.

Start with low brightness and a conservative current limit. Keep each output below 5A and combined consumption within the available supply budget. WLED’s brightness limiter estimates LED consumption; it is not a replacement for appropriate wiring or hardware protection.

5. Try the built-in digital microphone

Choose an audio-reactive effect in WLED and play music nearby. The MagWLED-2 firmware includes support for the onboard microphone. If the effect does not respond, check the Audio Reactive settings and that the microphone is enabled, then adjust the sound sensitivity. A generic WLED build may not include the required microphone support and defaults.

6. Check measured power

The onboard INA226 measures current, voltage and power for continuous monitoring in WLED. Open WLED’s Info panel to see the measurements with the MagWLED-2 firmware. These are measured readings, distinct from the brightness limiter’s estimated LED current.

For Home Assistant, the INA226 firmware supports MQTT publishing and Home Assistant discovery. Configure WLED to use your MQTT broker, then enable MqttPublish and MqttHomeAssistantDiscovery in the INA226 usermod settings. Home Assistant needs its MQTT integration connected to that broker. The measurements are also available in WLED’s JSON info data at /json/info for REST sensors and other integrations. Power is an instantaneous reading in watts; tracking energy over time requires integrating those readings into Wh or kWh.
